Open Source Victoria, een door de Australische regering gesubsidieerd
samenwerkingsverband van de Australische open-source industrie heeft
een samenwerkingsverband gesloten met Phase-N, Het bedrijf gaat onder
de naam ‘OpenOpenOffice’ (O3) een plugin voor Microsoft Office
ontwikkelen die ondersteuning voor de OpenDocument-standaard integreert
in het pakket. Het staat MSOffice gebruikers toe om bestanden die in
OpenDocument formaat zijn opgeslagen te lezen, maar ook om bestanden in
dat formaat weg te schrijven. Het OpenDOcument-bestandsformaat is de
nieuwe standaard voor de opslag en uitwisseling van tekstverwerkings-,
spreadsheet en presentatie-documenten. Het formaat wordt gesteund door
diverse kantoorautomatiseringspakketten, zoals OpenOffice.org,
StarOffice, Corel Office, AbiWorld, KOffice en andere. Microsoft zelf
heeft nog niet de intentie om deze op XML gebaseerde standaard te
ondersteunen. Het bedrijf komt in de volgende versie van Office met
zijn eigen open formaat.
Gefrustreerd door het feit dat Microsoft zelf geen aanstalten maakt om
het OpenDocument-formaat te ondersteunen, is Phase-N gaan nadenken over
een oplossing die niet alleen werkt, maar ook nog makkelijk te
gebruiken is. De beoogde plugin voor Microsoft Office zal .NET API
(Application Programming Interface) gebruiken om in te loggen op een
Apache-server. Deze roept vervolgens via een Perl-script de
vertaalfunctionaliteit van OpenOffice.org aan. ‘The amazing thing about
the O3-concept is how simple it is’, stelt ontwikkelaar Adam Kennedy.
‘Just take the Word-to-ODF filters from the OpenOffice.org suite, and
put them into Office in reverse. Microsoft has made it trivial to write
plugins for Office using .NET, and the OpenOffice.org team has put a
huge effort into their document conversion filters. So all that’s left
is to connect the two together via some simple SOAP-calls using C# and
Perl, and then make sure it is easy for people to install into Office.’
De makers zijn van plan om er een gratis product van te maken. Ze
denken de eerste stabiele versie nog voor het einde van het jaar af te
kunnen hebben. Het is in eerste instantie de bedoeling om iets dat snel
en makkelijk werkt te ontwikkelen. In een later stadium zal men zich
met het installatiegemak bezig gaan houden. Opties die men overweegt
zijn onder andere het opzetten van een publieke server, of de server
voor een klein bedrag per gebruik aanbieden aan
bedrijven. Ook het aanbieden van een kant en klaar systeem waar alle
serversoftware op genstalleerd staat behoort tot de mogelijkheden.
‘Through universal adoption, Open Document Format will bring, for the
first time in our industry’s history, the reality of friction-free
interchange of office documents between different office suites’, zo
stelt Con Zymaris. ‘The major hold-out here is Microsoft, who refuses
to support OpenDocument Format – a decision that seems based on self-serving reasons,
to protect the near-monopoly of their high-priced Office suite. The
ones who will suffer are the users. We believe that Microsoft Office
users should have a choice as to which format they store their
documents in’, zo vervolgt Zymaris. ‘This is what open source is about
– freedom from the control of proprietary vendors and more options for
users. By not supporting OpenDocument Format, Microsoft is placing its interests ahead
of its users, who will be barred from entering this new sphere of
document interoperability. This is another sign that the vendor cares
little for offering interoperability and choice to its customers. The
open source community equates such vendor stubbornness with damage, and
much like the Internet, we will route around it. If Microsoft won’t
offer choice to its Office users, we will do it for them’, zo dreigt
