Van 4 juli tot 4 augustus 2006 vind de eerste World eBook Fair plaats. Hierbij wordt een groot aantal digitale boeken volkomen gratis aangeboden. De Fair is georganiseerd door Project Gutenberg en de World eBook Library. Er is sprake van 'a third of a million' aan gratis te downloaden boeken. Het grootste deel van de boeken wordt betrokken bij de World eBook Library, waar normaal 8,95 dollar betaald moet worden om een jaar lang onbeperkte toegang te krijgen tot ruim 250.000 auteursrechtvrije boeken, artikelen of andere documenten. Ook andere digitale bibliotheken zijn betrokken bij deze eerste wereldwijde digitale boekenmaand. De beschikbare boeken variëren van fictie tot non-fictie en referentie. Ook DPP Digital Pulp Publishing, een ePublishing en eBook uitgeverij uit Californië, en Baen Books , een uitgever van science fiction literatuur en een van de technologisch meest innovatieve uitgeverijen, doen aan de World eBook Fair mee.

Deze eerste World eBook Fair is georganiseerd om te vieren dat 35 jaar geleden Project Gutenberg van start ging met het ambitieuze doel zoveel mogelijk boeken voor zoveel mogelijk wereldbewoners toegankelijk te maken. In 2007 zal weer een eBook Fair gehouden worden en dan moeten er 500.000 boeken beschikbaar zijn. Dat zijn er ongeveer 150.000 meer dan deze keer. Weer een jaar later zouden dit er in totaal 750.000 moeten zijn en in 2009 een miljoen. Liefhebbers van (digitale) boeken moeten in de zomermaanden maar wat tijd vrij plannen om het aanbod door te worstelen. 'We want to give the most books to the most people', zo zei Michael Hart, de initiator van Project Gutenberg in 1971. 'It has been our goal since the dawn of the Internet to break down the bars of ignorance and illiteracy'. Terwijl de commerciële eBook-markt erg klein is, zei Hart dat 'electronic books have caught on without getting a lot of publicity and are being widely read on handheld computers, cell phones and even special programs for use on iPods'. Gebaseerd op de door hem geconstateerde snel-toenemende vraag verwacht hij dat in 2020 meer dan 10 miljoen eBooks beschikbaar zullen zijn. 'These people that grew up on GameBoys — to them a GameBoy screen is the standard size', zo vervolgde Hart. 'To us old folks, it‘s too small. But they don‘t care. I‘ve gotten notes from people who said they would have never, ever read Shakespeare if I hadn‘t put it on the Internet'. Het initiatief roept opnieuw de hele discussie op over de toekomst van het gedrukte boek. De meest literaire discussie over de toekomst van het boek vond vorige maand plaats tussen Kevin Kelly, schrijver voor Wired Magazine, en John Updike. Kelly beschreef de toekomst als een 'Eden of everything in which all books are digitized and become a single liquid fabric of interconnected words and ideas'. Volgens Kelly is 'the only way for books to retain their waning authority in our culture is to wire their texts into the universal library'. Updike noemde Kelly's visie 'a pretty grisly scenario. Men and women caressing the pages of calf-bound masterpieces are approaching the condition of holdouts', zo zei Updike. 'Surly hermits refusing to come out and play in the electronic sunshine of the post-Gutenberg village'. Susan Flannery, directeur van de Cambridge Public Library, bouwt op dit moment een nieuwe bibliotheek voor ongeveer 60 miljoen dollar. Nauwelijks twee kilometer verder scant Google de bibliotheek van Harvard University voor opname in Kelly's 'liquid fabric'. Zo waarom een bibliotheek bouwen ? 'In planning for the new library, the rule of thumb is to plan for what we know and then to plan for being wrong', zo zegt ze. 'The building has to be as flexible as possible to anticipate things that none of us know about. I am part of a transitional generation. What about digital books? I would think the reference collections would be target number one for being replaced by electronic sources. We are prepared to reduce their shelf space accordingly. But some publishing trends favor print. Graphic novels are a whole new publishing area that is purely print. They're very popular, and the category seems to be growing. I don't think electronics will replace children's books — their visual beauty won't translate to the screen, and parents want the kids sitting on their lap. And I very much doubt that somebody is going to want to Google a novel'. In ieder geval niet voor de eerste twintig jaar, want voor dat tijdsbestek is de bibliotheek bedoeld. In ieder geval: het digitale boek is 'on the rise'. Het kan geen kwaad om gebruik te maken van de World eBook Fair.
