Apple heeft opnieuw voor opschudding gezorgd door de browser Safari via haar updatemechaniek Apple Software Update aan te bieden aan Windows-gebruikers die iTunes en Quicktime gebruiken. Het is een agressieve poging om het marktaandeel van de browser te vergroten, voornamelijk ten koste van Microsoft, maar wellicht ook ten koste van Mozilla's Firefox. De release van Safari 3.1. bracht Apple er toe om deze software eveneens aan te bieden aan de Windows-gebruikers. "We are using Software Update to make it easy and convenient for both Mac and Windows users to get the latest Safari update from Apple', zo zei Apple-woordvoerder Bill Evans. De actie is duidelijk een stap in de strijd tussen de web-browasers: Internet Explorer heeft een marktaandeel van 74,9 %, Mozilla Firefox 17,3 % en Safari 5,7 %. Volgens Apple its browser loads Web pages 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2'. Dit soort claims zijn niet vreemd als leveranciers concurrerende producten vergelijken. Onder de verbeteringen in deze laatste versie van Safari, die gratis verkrijgbaar is, is vooral de ondersteuning van additionele webstandaarden. Microsoft heeft afgelopen week gesteld dat het de default instelling van Internet Explorer 8 zo zou maken dat interoperabiliteit middels webstandaarden volledig wordt ondersteund. Dat is een grote stap voor het bedrijf dat normaal gesproken aan eigen interpretaties van webstandaarden de voorkeur geeft. Microsoft gaf aan dat die keuze een 'concrete benefit to Web designers (is) if all vendors give priority to interoperability around commonly accepted standards as they evolve'. Dat zei althans de Chief Software Architect van Microsoft, Ray Ozzie, in een verklaring. Microsoft gaf aan niet zo gelukkig te zijn met de actie van Apple, en vond dat een update-faciliteit niet gebruikt zou mogen worden om nieuwe software te verspreiden. Mozilla-topman, John Lilly, liet zich in dezelfde bewoordingen uit. 'What Apple is doing now with their Apple Software Update on Windows is wrong', zo meldt hij. 'It undermines the trust relationship great companies have with their customers, and that's bad — not just for Apple, but for the security of the whole Web'. Lilly laat duidelijk weten niet zo geporteerd te zijn van de techniek van een update-kanaal een software-distributiekanaal te maken. Afgezien van de techniek, het is voor Apple natuurlijk een uitstekende manier om op een platform waarop het nauwelijks vertegenwoordigd is te proberen greep te krijgen. Het probleem voor Lilly is dat de stap van Apple een bedreiging is voor Firefox, waarschijnlijk. Beide browsers hebben vanaf het eerste kwartaal van 2006 voortdurend marktaandeel gewonnen ten koste van Internet Explorer. It's a bad practice and should stop'. Uiteraard wilde Apple niet veel aan commentaar kwijt. Verder dan 'We are using Software Update to make it easy and convenient for both Mac and Windows users to get the latest Safari update from Apple', kwam het bedrijf niet. Tom Krazit maakt zich niet zo druk. 'That doesn't mean Apple's move is any less annoying, but it's hardly ground-breaking. And in this case, at least you have options. Apple made Safari 3.1 a standalone update option, so you can choose to uncheck the box next to the title and download just the iTunes updates. The company tells you exactly what you're downloading, and offers a link to its site for more information. Had Apple bundled Safari with iTunes, the way they bundle Quicktime, I can see where Windows users would have more of a complaint. Being forced to install something you don't want just to get updates for something you do want is not cool. You can download standalone versions of QuickTime or iTunes on Apple's site, but sometimes they appear bundled in Software Update and people don't realize they have other options. But that's not what's happening with Safari. If you don't want Safari, don't click 'install'. It seems that at some point people became conditioned to downloading anything that shows up from an official source, like Microsoft, Apple, AOL, Yahoo, or whoever. Remember, it's your PC; spend your installation capital wisely'. Met andere woorden: in plaats van Apple moreel ter verantwoording te roepen, wordt het misschien tijd om zelf eens goed in de gaten te houden wat je aan het doen bent !
