'Like the physical universe, the digital universe is expanding. In fact, exploding', zegt John Gantz, een onderzoeker van IDC. De afgelopen drie jaar heeft Gantz zich in opdracht van EMC bezig gehouden met het tellen van het aantal bytes dat elk jaar wordt gemaakt. En elk jaar weer rapporteert hij dat 'IDC previously underestimated the explosion of information'. Dat is erg goed nieuws voor EMC en consorten, maar niet zo goed voor de CIO's in de wereld. Zij zijn degenen die in een tijd van slinkende budgetten opslagcapaciteit moeten aanschaffen om al de content op te slaan die door hun werknemers, kun klanten en alle apparaten die die mensen bezitten wordt aangemaakt. IDC stelt dat 'budgets for servers and storage are shrinking by 6% this year'. AT&T biedt in deze tijden een nieuwe oplossing, die het 'Synaptic Storage' noemt, een service de 'on demand' kan worden afgenomen. EMC levert hiervoor de technologie; AT&T zal die in twee van zijn datacentra gaan gebruiken. Het bedrijf meldde dat 'it will start providing a virtual private storage cloud in the third quarter'. Het bedrijf voorspelt dat bedrijven met fluctuerende opslagbehoeften het een attractieve dienst zullen vinden.
'In 2008 alone', zo stelt IDC, 'the world created 487 billion gigabytes of information, up 73% from 2007'. Dat is 3 % meer dan het aan het begin van dit jaar voorspelde. IDC 'calculates the number by estimating the installed population of data-creating devices — CAT scanners, digital cameras, iPhones, RFID readers, supercomputers — and multiplying each by the amount of data each creates. Not everything has to be stored. Phone call routing information, digital TV signals and spam don’t need to be saved. But a lot of information does'. En zo gaat het bedrijf verder: 'Even the economic crisis, which is shrinking economic activity, can accelerate digital information creation. Demands for more financial accountability are likely to lead to requirements to store more information for forensic accountants to peruse. Stimulus spending in China and the U.S. will go for electronic health records, smart grids and more broadband that will also increase the amount of digital data'. De gezondheidszorg is een snel groeiende bron van digitiale informatie. IBM liet deze week weten dat 'the average individual’s health-care record, including digital x-rays and scan information, contains as many bits of data as 12 million novels'. IDC stelt dat 'an individual’s 'digital shadow' of information created about them such as surveillance photos, health records and credit reports is larger than the digital persona they create about themselves composed of things like blogs, YouTube videos and MySpace profiles'. Er zijn softwaretechnieken om de ongebreidelde groei in te dammen. Opslagvirtualisatie kan het percentage van iedere schijf dat werkelijk gebruikt wordt, Deduplicatie kan voorkomen dat hetzelfde object talloze malen wordt opgeslagen. Maar alles bijeen zijn het druppels op een gloeiende plaats. Immers, wat IDC ook stelt, het digitale universum verdubbelt zich elke 18 maanden….
