In science fiction wordt een forcefield gebruikt als een hele normale manier om beveiliging te realiseren. Check Point wil zo'n beveiliging gaan bieden middels ZoneAlarm ForceField. Het product laat een innovatieve manier zien voor het beveiligen van de desktop door gebruikers een 'onzichtbare', op virtualisatie gebaseerde vorm van beveiliging te bieden. Het gebruik van virtualisatie is op zich niet nieuw; een dergelijke vorm van beveiliging wordt ook al geboden door de Firefox browser die op Vmware draait. Het basis idee daar is dat als de browser gevirtualiseerd wordt in een eigen virtuele container, malware beperkt wordt tot die virtuele omgeving en het actuele fysieke systeem niet kan besmetten. Jon Gable, product-directeur van Check Point's ZoneAlarm-divisie, stelt dat het ForceField meer doet dan de Vmware-appliance. 'VMware can be somewhat complicated for the average PC user', zo zegt Gable. 'ForceField is very easy to use, and it's very small, less than 5 megs. Additionally ForceField includes much more than virtualization, to provide users with more robust security. In fact, ForceField includes seven layers of security – including antiphising, anti-spyware, and key logger jamming'.
ForceField is een publieke beta sinds eind 2007 en wordt nu algemeen beschikbaar emaakt. Het bedrijf claimt al meer dan 160.000 downloads. Gable stelde dat 'during the beta period Check Point was able to make significant enhancements to the product's usability, performance, stability and security. Those enhancements were born out of testing as well as tens of thousands of individual survey responses'. ForceField kan gebruikers echter niet tegen alle Internetbedreigingen beschermen. 'ForceField is a browser security product and works with Internet Explorer and FireFox. All other conduits to the Internet would be protected by existing security suites, which is why we recommend users run ForceField in conjunction with their existing security products. ForceField does not replace the traditional security suite'. Gable stelde dat 'the biggest barriers to adoption for ForceField are making consumers aware of some of the new emerging Web attacks. It's important for Check Point to dispel the common myths surrounding security. Among those myths is the idea that users are safe if they stick with well-known Web sites and that firewall products will protect users from all threats'. Het plan van CheckPoint is om, nu het ForceField beschikbaar is, het product ook aan te bieden aan grotere bedrijven. 'Although ForceField can currently be purchased by SMB and enterprise customers, we will be exploring the possibility of enhancing the product for these audiences and including features such as centralized management capabilities', zo stelt Gable. Een interessant product in ieder geval. Op virtualisatie gebaseerde oplossingen voor beveiliging zullen in de komende jaren ook een steeds grotere rol gaan spelen in de steeds meer gevirtualiseerde informatiearchitecturen van vandaag de dag.
