De strijd tussen de bestandsformaten ODF en OOXML lijkt uiteindelijk ODF's positie alleen maar te hebben versterkt. Zelfs Microsoft heeft nu besloten om ODF als standaardformaat te gaan ondersteunen. ODF heeft geprofiteerd van de twee jaar durende ratificatieperiode van OOXML. Dat is althans de mening van Stuart McKee, Microsoft's national technology officer, die hij verkondigde op de Red Hat Summit in Boston. 'ODF has clearly won', zo stelt McKee, verwijzend naar Microsoft's aankondiging dat het ODF in Office als een 'native' bestandsformaat gaat ondersteunen en dat het bedrijf de technische commissie zal bijtreden waarin de nieuwe versie van het bestandsformaat wordt ontwikkeld. 'We sell software for a living. The ability to implement ODF in the middle of our ship cycle was just not possible', zo zei hij. 'We couldn't do that during the release of Office 2007. We're looking forward and committed to doing more than [ODF-to-OOXML] translators'. In april werd OOXML door de ISO tot standaard verklaard. De aanhangers van ODF, waaronder IBM en Sun, hebben het formaat lang bestreden als zijnde een te 'proprietary to be declared a standard'. Dit had allemaal beter kunnen verlopen als Microsoft meer betrokken was geweest bij standaardorganen in het verleden, zo zei McKee. 'Microsoft was really, really late to this game. It was very difficult to enter in conversations around the world where the debate had already been framed'.
Douglas Johnson, bij Sun betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van standaarden, zei dat de hele procedure de andere office-suites de mogelijkheid gegeven heeft om competetief te worden. 'The office-suite market has been ruled by one dominant player after another, but those markets were never governed by good open standards practices', zo zei hij. 'What has happened is that this dominant-player market has actually been upset and opened to competition that didn't exist before'. Microsoft's beslissing om ODF te ondersteunen is in ieders voordeel, zo stelt hij. 'I'm a huge fan of Microsoft's ability to create these very huge markets, but they do have a problem: growing your market when you're the dominant player. They are starting to move to a business model that doesn't rely on keeping their document formats as a lock-in vector'. Venky Hariharan, directeur corporate affairs voor Red Hat in India, zei dat de OOXML strijd 'has raised the profile of the standards community in general. People are now seriously concerned about the governance of the standards process'. 'Microsoft will work to help evolve ODF, but it is doubtful that it and OOXML will ever merge', zo zegt McKee. 'I don't think we're going to see a situation where we have single unifying standards. That's because formats for one general purpose can have variations for different needs, such as the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) standard, commonly used for lighter-weight images, and the TIFF (Tag Image File Format) specification, often employed for high-resolution files'. Maar Hariharan is het daar niet mee eens. 'To have two standards for the same purpose defeats the idea. Multiple standards for the same application, in my opinion, is a bad thing…. We should collaborate on developing standards and compete on their implementation'. De reden waarom Microsoft ineens met steun komt voor ODF is onbekend. Andy Updegrove denkt dat het iets te maken kan hebben met Microsoft's problemen in Europa en met de standaardenlichamen die OOXML nu bestieren. 'It appears likely that Microsoft actually can't implement a fully-compliant version of the standard just yet'.
