Ondernemingen staan meer open voor open source software dankzij de financiële crisis, zo zegt onderzoeksbureau IDC. De onderzoekers hebben hun verwachtingen voor de groei van de open source-markt bijgesteld. Op basis van een gemiddeld (voorspeld) groeipercentage van 22,4 procent, zal in het jaar 2013 in totaal ruim acht miljard dollar winst worden gemaakt met deze software. In 2008 was dat nog een krappe drie miljard dollar. De winst die IDC becijfert is enkel de winst uit de verkoop van open source software. Dat de broncode van software wordt vrijgegeven onder een open source-licentie betekent namelijk niet dat de op basis daarvan samengestelde producten gratis zijn. De winstvoorspelling van acht miljard is dus slechts een indicatie van het totaalbedrag dat er volgens IDC in 2013 wordt verdiend aan open source-software. Er zijn namelijk heel veel bedrijven die er indirect geld aan verdienen door de implementatie en ondersteuning ervan. Volgens IDC bevinden zich in die groep steeds meer grote leveranciers. Zij nemen open source-software in hun aanbod op. Ook in SAAS wordt, om beter op prijs te kunnen concurreren, steeds meer gebruik gemaakt van open source software. Volgens het marktonderzoeksbureau kan het bijna niet anders dan dat verkopers van gesloten software deze trend momenteel in hun portemonnee terug zien.
'The open source software market has seen a strong boost from the current economic crisis', zo zegt Michael Fauscette, Vice President van Software Business Solutions binnen IDC. 'OSS is increasingly a part of the enterprise software strategy of leading businesses and is seeing mainstream adoption at a strong pace. As the overall software industry continues to consolidate, it will be key for OSS vendors to reach scale if they plan to continue as a standalone business'. Het IDC rapport, 'Worldwide Open Source Software 2009-2013 Forecast', ondersteunt eerdere berichten over toenemende verkopen van open source-software, maar bevestigt ook een IDC-onderzoek uit april, waarin gesteld wordt dat Linux-gerelateerde software met 21 procent groeit dit jaar, en in totaal met 23 procent tot aan 2013. 'While Linux-related software was projected to grow from $12.3 billion in 2008 to $35.5 billion in 2013, Microsoft should move from a $149 billion mark in 2008, up to $206 billion', zo schreef IDC. Uiteraard is voorzichtigheid troef, want IDC zal natuurlijk haar eigen rapporten niet tegenspreken. 'I’m bullish on open source. The economy and general perception of IT about the quality and usefulness of having an open source policy in their strategy all the way up the stack has changed and accelerated the last year. When I talk to CIOs, I get a lot more positive reaction in the last few years', zo zegt Fauscette. 'We've seen a tremendous growth in interest from companies who really feel uncomfortable with the price hikes and the pricing practices of the big players in the proprietary world', zo zegt Roger Burkhardt, CEO van Ingres. 'Now that budgets are being squeezed, we see a tremendous interest in the economic model that we offer'. Analisten wijzen er op dat belangrijke cloud-infrastructuren, zoals Amazon, Rackspace en Google, grotendeels vertrouwen op open source-software. 'Open source continues do need to pave the way such that new cloud providers can come online and offer various levels of service and differentiate their services from those of the existing incumbents in cloud computing', zo zegt Brian Stevens, CTO van Red Gat. 'There's a lot of potential for open source software and cloud computing to complement each other and perhaps for open source software to become an onramp to the cloud. Open source software is appealing for those who want the option of moving their systems to another cloud, back in-house or a hybrid of the two. It has some potential to make it easier for organizations to shift their deployments'.
