Een deel van de code voor Thunderbird 3 is gemaakt door het Franse leger. De Fransen wilden zelf mailextensies ontwikkelen, dat is in Outlook niet mogelijk. Twee jaar geleden besloot het Franse leger over te stappen op Thunderbird om eigen security-extensies te bouwen. Op basis daarvan bouwden de militairen zelfs een eigen veilige variant op Thunderbird: Trustedbird, voorheen bekend als Milimail. Code van TrustedBird is terechtgekomen in de deze week verschenen versie 3.0 van Thunderbird. De belangrijkste aanpassing aan de originele software is een systeem waarmee gemonitord wordt of een mail wel of niet gelezen is. ‘The primary changes (the military) have made allow them to know for sure when messages have been read, which is critical in a command-and-control organization’, zegt David Ascher van Mozilla Messaging. ‘The French military is helping build an ecosystem of specialists around the world that provide specialized add-ons, leveraging our platform to help meet customer needs’, zo vervolgt Ascher. De overstap naar Trustedbird had wel de nodige voeten in aarde. ‘It is never completely free’, zo zei kolonel Bruno Poirier-Coutansais van de IT-afdeling van de Gendarmerie Nationale. ‘There was initial reluctance to embrace Thunderbird because it is less reassuring than to have a renowned company that can bring quality support’.
Op de 80.000 computers van het Franse leger draait nu Trustedbird. Ook de ministeries van Financiën, Binnenlandse Zaken en Cultuur gebruiken de open source mailcient. Het mailprogramma bevalt inmiddels zo goed dat het Franse leger TrustedBird aan NAVO heeft gepresenteerd. ‘We started with a military project, but quickly generalized it’, zei luitenant-kolonel Frederic Suel van het ministerie van defensie. De Gendarmerie Nationale, in 2003 (bij de start van het project) onderdeel van het Franse leger, is verantwoordelijk voor het omtwerp. Ze maakte een deel van het werk open source en bracht het samen met Mozilla uit. Het Franse leger ‘is helping build an ecosystem of specialists around the world that provide specialized add-ons, leveraging our platform to help meet customer needs’, zo stelt Mozilla’s Ascher. ‘The result is a product that is compatible with Yahoo! mail, Google Gmail and other email systems, but competes against Microsoft Outlook’. Waarnemers stellen dat ‘the original decision to go to open source was in part to show the French public that the government was trying to save money. But many software experts say free software also has its costs and the French acknowledged that. New software requires the re-training of information technology specialists’. Medewerkers moeten ook leren omgaan met nieuwe software. Poirier-Coutansais stelt dat ‘Microsoft has platoons of technicians in France at a state-of-the-art glass building in a western suburban business district emblazoned with the company logo, while Mozilla, with 10 employees in an anonymous concrete colored residential building, is distant from Paris’s business districts. Nonetheless, the French government is now pleased with the results’. Suel stelde dat ‘they may move beyond government, because Trusted Bird’s security extensions make it transposable to large international companies’.
