Een Australische natuurkundige heeft een 99 jaar oude fout ontdekt in de definitie van het woord 'sifon' in de Oxford English Dictionary (OED). Dr. Stephen Hughes, van de Queensland University of Technology in Brsibane, ontdekte de fout in het woordenboek tijdens onderzoek voor een artikel voor natuurkundeleraren. De definitie stelt dat atmosferische druk sifons laat werken, terwijl het in werkelijkheid de zwaartekracht is, die het ding laat werken. Hughes stelde zeer verbaasd te zijn dat het woordenboek de omschrijving fout had. 'It is gravity that moves the fluid in a siphon, with the water in the longer downward arm pulling the water up the shorter arm', zo stelt Hughes. 'We would all have an issue if the dictionary defined a koala as a species of bear, or a rose as a tulip'. De fout is in 1911 voor de eerste keer gemaakt en is sindsdien onopgemerkt gebleven. Dat kan zijn, omdat natuurkundigen niet de gewoonte hebben omschrijvingen na te lezen in algemene woordenboeken of het niet de moeite waard vonden de fout te herstellen. Eerlijk gezegd: zelf zou ik waarschijnlijk de moeite niet nemen om de redactie van het woordenboek op de hoogte te stellen.
Zo gauw Hughes zijn ontdekking deed, stelde hij het revisieteam van de Oxford English Dictonary op de hoogte. Hughes: 'I came across the error after I visited an enormous siphon in South Australia, which transfers millions of gigalitres from a river system into a depleted lake. I thought this example would make a great education paper … but in my background research I discovered there was much contention about the definition of the word 'siphon'. I found that almost every dictionary contained the same misconception that atmospheric pressure, not gravity, pushed liquid through the tube of a siphon'. Een woordvoerder van de redactie van het woordenboek zei dat 'the definition was written in 1911 by editors who were not scientists and that Dr Hughes's notes would be taken into account when the entry was rewritten'. Hughes is nu van plan alle woordenboeken en encyclopedieen te controleren, die de definitie van de Oxford English Dictionary hebben overgenomen. In ieder geval hoeft de Van Dale niet aangepast te worden: daar is de verklaring juist.
