Dataopslag en virtualisatie vormen de basis voor verdere acceptatie van cloud computing. Dit zei EMC’s CEO Joe Tucci op EMC World 2010, de jaarlijkse conferentie voor klanten en partners in Boston. Volgens Tucci maakt cloud computing gegevens gemakkelijker toegankelijk. 'I believe virtualization and private clouds to be the future of storage networking and data centers', zo zegt EMC-baas Joe Tucci. 'We plan to be at the forefront of companies building that next-generation infrastructure. En: 'EMC is going all out on the private cloud. It is a journey well worth taking'. Intussen groeit de hoeveelheid data wereldwijd. Volgens een onderzoek van onderzoeksbureau IDC in opdracht van EMC is er 0.8 zettabyte data in 2010. Een zettabyte staat gelijk aan een triljoen gigabytes. In 2020 zou er sprake zijn van 35.2 zettabytes. De groei van data wordt veroorzaakt door meer breedband, toenemend gebruik van mobiele apparatuur, zoals smartphones en notebooks en door video. Zo is er een enorme groei van data in de zorgsector. Het gaat om medische data, zoals MRI-scans en DNA-banken. EMC's CEO zegt dat grote hoeveelhden gegevens verstuurd en bewaard kunnen worden in de cloud.
Tucci begon met een historisch overzicht van de verschillende IT-golven: mainframe, mini-computers, distributed computing e.d. 'The next wave is the cloud. The IT infrastructure is getting too complex, inefficient and costly. In support of this, IDC figures that 72 percent of IT budgets are spent just to maintain existing applications'. Tucci zegt dat met bestaande datacenters en nieuwe technologie een private cloud omgeving kan worden gecreëerd. Met service providers wil EMC public clouds bouwen. 'Eventually, there will be tens of thousands of private clouds and hundreds of public clouds in existence', zo zei hij. 'What tends to scare people away from putting their data in the cloud is worries about reliability, control and security. We believe that setting up private clouds within a corporation is the best way to address these concerns. Control continues to reside within the company. At the same time, a cloud provides far more dynamic storage and IT resources, available on demand, but also as reliable and secure as in a traditional data center'. Voor dat gebeurt, is er nog wel werk aan de winkel. Ten eerste moet er een nieuwe infrastructuur komen voor alle datacenters. Als het aan Tucci ligt, wordt die voorzien van EMC-technologie, zoals de virtualisatiesoftware van VMware. De nieuwe VPLEX-technologie is een optie. Daarmee wordt virtualisatie over lange afstanden uitgevoerd en kan data worden verstuurd en toegankelijk zijn via verschillende datacenters. 'Rather than one company that delivers everything, we have lots of partners to help us build a private cloud', zo zei said Tucci. 'We want to give people the opportunity to build the cloud using whatever hardware they want. Choice is very important in our approach'. Dat betekent ook dat niet-EMC hardware gebruikt kan worden. 'If people want to use storage hardware from other vendors, the EMC cloud would facilitate that'. Tucci legde uit dat 'private and public clouds have to coexist. Different functions will reside in the public domain, while others are held within a private cloud. What has to happen to make this work, though, is to be able to move workloads between the two in order to minimize costs and maximize efficiency. Mobility is king and so data will reside in the cloud and be accessed by whatever device the user prefers. Your information will be stored centrally and you will use different devices to access it. It will take both a private and public cloud to provide that level of flexibility. This distributed storage federation solution eliminates the boundaries of physical storage and allows information resources to be transparently pooled and shared over distance for new levels of efficiency, control and choice'.
