IBM en Ubuntu zetten een aanval in op de Windows-bestuurde computers. IBM wil Microsoft's dominantie op de PC ondermijnen, en zodoende rolt IBM nu samen met Ubuntu Linux-ontwikkelaar Canonical een virtuele desktop-oplossing uit die IBM Lotus software aanbiedt aan gebruikers. Het is een Ubuntu Desktop met IBM Lotus-applicaties, die aangeleverd worden met een Linux virtuele desktop infrastructuur van Virtual Bridges. De applicaties worden aangeboden als Open Collaboration Client Solution Software (OCCS) en bevatten Lotus Symphony, Lotus Notes en andere Lotus software. Deze Linux virtuele desktop is de eerste productafkondiging van het 'Microsoft-Free PC' project dat het aankondigde op LinuxWorld in oktober 2008. Inna Kuznetsova, directeur voor Linux-initiatieven bij IBM, stelde dat 'in today's economy, the desire for enterprises to have full functionality and lower cost is driving the move to PCs free of Microsoft software'. De aanbieding is niet volledig open source, zo zegt Kuznetsova, 'but it's designed to appeal to customers weighing functionality, price and support — regardless of licensing. It is an open standards solution. It includes components that are open source and it includes components which are not open source. We think the market today has shifted from the being either totally open or closed'. Ze stelde tevens dat 'for some of IBM's customers, open source may be an important part of their strategy. However I often hear that focusing on open standards can help facilitate choice among users'. IBM stelt dat de nieuwe oplossing goedkoper is dan de oplossing die Microsoft biedt. En het zijn volgens IBM kostenaspecten die de gebruikers van Microsoft zullen wegdrijven naar Linux-oplossingen.
Kuznetsova stelt 'that everyone is looking to cut costs in the current economy and the Linux virtual desktop is an effort to help them save'. Virtualisatie kan bedrijven helpen kosten te besparen door minder energie te gebruiken middel server consolidatie en beter opslaggebruik. 'The Linux desktop already provides great savings compared to a Microsoft desktop', zo zegt Kuznetsova. 'In a nutshell, we think that the Linux desktop is a great step toward saving in this economy and using a virtual desktop really increases the customers' possibility to save'. Kuznetsova kon echter geen exacte prijsdetails geven voor de totale IBM Linux virtuele desktop oplossing. Ze legde uit dat 'IBM is still in the process of finalizing arrangements with its business partners'. Ze wist wel te melden dat het component van Virtual Bridges op $49 per gebruiker zou komen. De andere kosten zijn nog niet openbaar. Kuznetsova vertelde ook niets over financiele afspraken tussen IBM en Canonical, die er zeker zullen zijn. Het meest zichtbare doel van IBM is uiteraard de Microsoft software, hoewel Kuznetsova ook stelt dat het bedrijf 'is aiming to challenge the larger idea of what a "desktop" PC means. We are in more of a paradigm competition than a product-to-product competition', zo zei ze. 'We are competing against the standard perception that the desktop is your machine on your desk, running Windows — and skipping out on all the other possibilities. I think the adoption rate of virtual desktops is still low enough and has room to grow up'. Hoewel Ubuntu in deze virtuele oplossing van IBM is meegenomen, liet Kuznetsova weten dat 'it does not necessarily imply a shift away from either Red Hat or Novell, the company's other Linux partners. There is no specific reason why this solution is being announced first with Ubuntu', zo gaf ze aan. 'We work on a number of projects with all of our Linux partners. At different times, different projects come through the pipeline. Today we announced our first virtual desktop solution with Canonical Ubuntu, but we will continue working in this direction, and I know there is a lot of enthusiasm and interest from all of our Linux partners in this area'.
